Bladder disorders affect both men and women, and they can cause inconvenience and embarrassment in an otherwise normal, active life. Our physicians specialize in treating many bladder function disorders, including:
Neurogenic bladder – The loss of normal bladder function caused by damage to part of the nervous system; may cause the bladder to be overactive or underactive
Overactive bladder – A sudden, urgent need to urinate, often followed by an involuntary loss of urine before you can reach a toilet
Underactive bladder – The inability of the bladder to contract or empty fully, causing a backup of urine (known as retention) or urine dribbling
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) – UTIs that occur repeatedly over a period of time, sometimes caused by abnormalities in the urinary tract
Interstitial cystitis – A chronic bladder condition that causes pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder area; it is associated with a frequent need to urinate and/or a sudden urge to urinate
Evaluations. Urodynamic study and cystoscopy - Testing that evaluates the bladder problems you are experiencing.
Treatments. Bladder disorders can be treated in many ways. A Urology Specialists doctor can help determine the best treatment for you.
Medication – Medications used to treat bladder disorders and/or improve their symptoms, such as incontinence
Interstim procedure – Treatment using electrical stimulation that helps to decrease the symptoms of urinary incontinence
Indwelling catheters and suprapubic catheters – Indwelling catheters are inserted into the bladder through the urethra and allowed to remain there; they allow urine to flow continuously into a containment device outside the body. Suprapubic catheters serve the same function, but are inserted into the bladder through the abdominal wall.
